Fairway hours that competed with the rest of the job
Fairway mowing is one of the most labor intensive jobs on any golf course. Every pass has to fit around play, weather and wet spells that make turf hard to cut cleanly, and the hours add up quickly across a full layout.
At a Scottish club with 16 fairways, the greenkeeping team faced the same squeeze. Mowing and the detailed work of course presentation and agronomy competed for the same crew hours.
Four mowers, a trial period and an overnight schedule
The club brought in four robotic mowers after a trial period with the robot supplier and an autonomous technology specialist. The machines were delivered in April and now work all 16 fairways overnight.
The fleet followed a wider refresh of the club's machinery about a year earlier. Routine cutting moved to the night, which left daytime hours free for other grounds work.

What the crew does with the recovered time
The course manager estimates that 30 to 40 labor hours a week come back to the grounds crew during the growing season. A July 2026 trade report cites up to 40 hours every week, and the club's own reporting uses the same upper figure. These are estimates, not audited measurements.
Recovered hours have gone into course presentation and agronomic work, the close attention that turf quality and playing conditions demand. Presentation is the part of the job that members see every day.
Cut quality stayed in view. The course manager says the machines are rotary rather than cylinder units and rates the cut as very good.
Staffing has shifted as well. Some team members now help manage the machines, monitor schedules and look after the fleet.
What a fleet like this asks of a buyer

Service Robot Co. is a full service, vendor neutral robot integrator for US businesses. We select robots across manufacturers, offer commercial robot leasing through lease financing programs, deploy and integrate each unit, train the people who run it and service it through a nationwide US engineer network. This club is a documented real world example we analyze. It is not a client account, and we did not run this deployment.
The lesson for a grounds operator weighing a similar fleet is that recovered hours depend on uptime. Our leases run three years with one fixed robot lease payment, quoted after a site assessment, so the budget is known before the first overnight pass. A buyer can also test the schedule with a single leased unit before scaling the robot fleet management plan.
