Hospital UV-C Robot Study: 96% Cut in Surface Bacteria After Cleaning

Twelve high-touch surfaces, 180 samples, one hospital. Standard cleaning cut total viable count 67%, and adding a UV-C robot reached 96%. Read the workflow.

Surfaces that get touched all day

High-touch surfaces in a hospital are handled by staff, patients and visitors from the start of a shift to the end. Standard cleaning removes soil and reduces the microbial load, but it happens in bursts between patients and under real time pressure, so contamination can persist on the surfaces people touch most.

The hospital wanted a measurable step beyond its standard operating procedure. Infection-prevention leaders needed to know whether a robot would earn a place in a tight cleaning workflow, and they needed surface-level numbers to justify the decision.

Sampling the surfaces in three conditions

The hospital tested 12 high-touch surfaces across 180 samples in a working hospital setting. Each surface was sampled after healthcare activity had left it dirty, after standard operating procedure cleaning alone, and after that same cleaning followed by treatment with a UV-C disinfection robot. Sampling in live conditions meant the surfaces carried the real mix of use and handling.

The robot ran as an added step after the usual round. Staff kept their existing procedure, and the robot contributed a UV-C pass on top of it, so the comparison isolated what the robot added.

What the samples showed

Standard cleaning alone cut total viable count by 67% on average across the surfaces. Adding UV-C robot treatment after that same cleaning raised the average reduction to 96%. Both results differed significantly from the dirty condition, with P values of 0.022 after standard cleaning and 0.007 after the combined process.

The dose tells a more demanding story. The mean UV-C dose on the sampled surfaces in the hospital was 29.31 mJ/cm2. In controlled conditions, the robot removed Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa completely at under 4 mJ/cm2, while adenovirus needed 194 mJ/cm2 and coronavirus 229E needed 38.8 mJ/cm2. The hospital result fell short of the lab result because a higher dose was needed to reach the same total viable count reduction.

Where a UV-C robot fits an infection-control plan

This hospital's numbers show what a layered process can add, and they also show that dose matters. A facility weighing a UV-C robot should ask less whether the device works in principle and more whether its coverage and cycle time deliver enough dose to the surfaces that carry the most risk.

Service Robot Co. is a full-service, OEM-neutral commercial robot integrator for US businesses. We select the right robots across manufacturers, then finance, deploy, integrate, train and service every unit through a nationwide US engineer network, so one partner handles the whole lifecycle. We lease robots only, on a 3-year lease with one fixed payment quoted after a site assessment, and that assessment maps the rooms, surfaces and workflow before any number is quoted.

Several manufacturers build UV-C disinfection robots, and a fair comparison looks at dose on real surfaces, time per room and how a unit moves between spaces. An integrator not tied to one brand can run those comparisons on the same site, which suits hospital teams planning an infection control robot program.

Frequently asked questions

Not in this case. The robot ran as a step after standard operating procedure cleaning, and the largest reduction came from the combined process. Standard cleaning alone still delivered a 67% average cut in total viable count.
