Lab Specimen Robots Carry 150+ Deliveries a Day Across Critical Care Units

A multi-hospital US health system added two lab specimen robots to ICU, cardiovascular ICU and dialysis runs, then grew its fleet across more sites.

Specimens Moving by Hand Through Critical Care

A multi-hospital US health system operating 16 hospitals had a logistics gap that no amount of goodwill could close. Several of its hospitals lacked pneumatic tube systems in key departments, so lab specimens, medications and supplies still traveled by hand.

The pressure was sharpest in the intensive care units, the cardiovascular ICU and the dialysis units. Specimens from these areas needed to reach the lab on a steady rhythm, and every carried tube or vial pulled a caregiver away from the bedside for the length of the walk and the wait for an elevator.

  • Several hospitals without tube systems in key departments

Two Robots, One Set of Routes, Round the Clock

The system put two lab specimen delivery robots into service in 2025, assigned to carry specimens from the ICU, the cardiovascular ICU and the dialysis units. The robots navigated hallways and elevators around the clock, so runs did not depend on shift patterns or a free porter.

Later, the system extended the program to other hospitals in its network. In 2026, two more robots were added at Winter Haven hospitals, widening the fleet beyond the original units.

What the Fleet Delivered

The robot supplier reports more than 150 deliveries per day across the fleet, and more than 600 hours saved per month, collectively. The 600-hour figure covers the wider fleet rather than only the two robots that began in 2025, so it describes the network as a whole.

In its first two days on the floor, one robot completed 18 deliveries. That early count gave a sense of how quickly a route settles once a robot is running it every shift.

Any buyer weighing a similar program should measure caregiver minutes per specimen run on their own floors, before and after go live. Fleet-wide totals mix robots, units and routes, so they work best as a direction rather than a budget line.

What a Specimen Robot Program Asks of a Buyer

Most of the hard decisions in this story happened before the first run. Which robot fits a hallway with tight turns, how many elevators sit on the route, and whether the lab can absorb a steady stream of specimens are questions that come first, not last.

Service Robot Co. is an OEM neutral integrator for US businesses. We select the right robot across manufacturers, then lease it to you on a 3 year lease with one fixed payment quoted after a site assessment. Our team deploys, integrates, trains and services every unit through a nationwide network of US engineers, so a hospital works with one partner and one number from first walkthrough to go live support.

A site assessment maps the actual routes, elevator calls and dock points before a robot is committed to a floor. That mapping is what separates a pilot that scales from one that stalls in the corridor.

Frequently asked questions

Not in a direct sense. In this deployment the robots covered routes in departments where tube systems were missing, so staff had been carrying specimens by hand. A hospital can keep its existing tubes where they already work and let robots handle the gaps.
