A New Zealand Primary School Puts Robotic Mowing Savings Into Teacher Aide Hours
A New Zealand primary school's robotic mower, routed by GPS, is estimated by the principal to save over $10,000 a year, funding extra teacher-aide hours.

Mowing as a standing cost for a small school
Grounds upkeep never leaves the calendar. For a small or rural school, lawns, sports fields and boundaries come back every week, and the time and money spent on them compete with everything else the site needs.
The school took part in a Ministry of Education Small School Facilities Management pilot. The programme aimed to reduce property management costs for small and rural schools, and eight schools around the Waikato were chosen to trial robot mowers.
The pilot put a plain question to participating schools: could a robot mower take on routine mowing and cut property management costs?
Mapping the grounds before the mower runs
The rollout began with the ground itself. A local firm installed the mower and mapped the site with GPS, and that map set the route the machine would follow.
The mower is GPS-tracked and restricted to the school boundaries, so it works the lawns it was given and nothing beyond them. The pilot ran from July 2024 to the end of June 2025.
- Map the grounds with GPS to set the mowing route.
- Install the mower through a local firm.
- Track the mower by GPS and hold it inside the school boundaries.
- Run the pilot from July 2024 to the end of June 2025.

What the school estimates it saved

The headline figure is more than $10,000 a year in mowing cost savings. That number is the principal's own estimate, not a measured audit, and it reads best as the school's calculation.
The school put part of those savings toward extra teacher-aide hours. In the principal's account, the extra hours meant more support for students.
Taken together, the story is one of a recurring grounds cost turned into classroom support time, with the savings figure left as the school's own estimate.
Where a robot lease fits a grounds program like this
Service Robot Co. is a vendor neutral robot integrator for US businesses. We select the right robots across manufacturers, then finance, deploy, integrate, train and service every unit through a nationwide US engineer network, so one partner answers for the whole lifecycle.
Our commercial robot leasing runs on a 3-year lease. The lease is quoted after a site assessment, and the fixed robot lease payment comes as one number, so the boundary, route and mapping questions get answered before any unit goes out.
Robot deployment and integration, along with service from that same partner, is what most buyers ask us to handle. Many start with one leased unit through a robot pilot program, and expand only if the results hold up.
