How a Slovakian Vegetable Grower Cut Herbicide Use 86% With Vision Sprayers

A large Slovakian onion and vegetable operation cut herbicide from 200 to 28.2 liters per hectare, an 86 percent first-year saving, with three vision sprayers.

Broadcast sprays overshot each row

A large Slovakian vegetable grower manages thousands of hectares across many crops, with hundreds of hectares devoted to onions alone. Conventional broadcast herbicide treated whole swaths even when only weeds needed product, pushing use toward about two hundred liters per hectare.

Supermarket and EU residue rules left little room for waste. The team needed crop protection that hit weeds without bathing every onion row in extra chemistry.

Three vision-guided ultra-precision sprayers

After field trials, the grower deployed three autonomous precision sprayers that identify weeds and apply product in targeted bursts. Two units ran first and proved valuable enough that a third joined before the next season.

During peak windows the machines run around the clock and complete a full pass across onion fields about every five days. Support teams tuned crop recognition when early carrot algorithms needed adjustment for local conditions.

  • Map fields and calibrate vision for onion rows first
  • Run sprayers on a five-day cycle through the heaviest weed weeks
  • Add a third unit once uptime and savings were proven
  • Plan expansion toward soybeans, seed corn, and volunteer potato control

Documented first-year results cut herbicide application from two hundred liters per hectare to twenty-eight point two liters per hectare, an eighty-six percent reduction. Agronomists reported healthier onions with less chemical stress and visible growth advantages versus untreated strips in trials.

The operation also reduced fungicide reliance because targeted weed control lowered overall plant stress. Fields still face wind and dense canopies, but the sprayers maintained consistent performance in those conditions per the grower interviews.

What row-crop farms can borrow

Vegetable and specialty crop farms in the US face the same tension between residue limits and broadcast sprayer habits. Precision agriculture robots like vision-guided sprayers let you pilot one crop on robot rental monthly terms before you scale robot leasing for business across seasons.

Frequently asked questions

Broadcast rigs treat the full bed even when weeds are sparse, which drove about two hundred liters per hectare before precision units arrived. Targeted nozzles apply product only where cameras see weeds, which is how the documented rate fell to twenty-eight point two liters.
