How an Austrian Shopping Center Scrubbed Nearly 4,000 Square Meters Overnight With Elevator Integration

Shopping center case study: one autonomous scrubber cleans nearly 4,000 sq m across three floors overnight with elevator and workstation automation.

Night scrubbing could not keep pace

The center mixes retail and entertainment across three busy levels where foot traffic and spills show up fast. Contractor-led night cleaning was costly, staffing was uneven, and results varied enough that morning openings sometimes started behind.

Leadership wanted predictable overnight coverage without escorting machines floor to floor or babysitting water changes at 2 a.m.

Link the scrubber to lifts and a dock

In November 2023 the team deployed one autonomous scrubber with a docking workstation that refills freshwater, dumps wastewater, and recharges the battery without a night porter on standby. Routes were scheduled after close so guest traffic stayed clear.

Engineers coupled the robot to a fifteen-year-old elevator so it could ride between levels on its own, then return to a fixed start point before doors opened. That pairing let one unit cover retail zones and the entertainment wing on the same shift.

  • Map each floor’s aisles and food-court spill zones before the first overnight run.
  • Test elevator calls with facilities staff watching the first dozen crossings.
  • Keep guest doors locked and routes fenced from late-night film crowds.
  • Review dock water cycles weekly until refill timing is predictable.

Published results describe nearly four thousand square meters of flooring cleaned autonomously across three floors on overnight cycles, with the unit ready at its home point before morning trade. Facility leaders reported less reliance on outside cleaning crews and more consistent shine in high-visibility corridors.

Because the workstation handled water and power, supervisors spent time on exceptions rather than tank swaps. Elevator linkage meant one machine could finish levels that used to require separate contractor teams.

What US mall operators can study

This story is a documented European deployment, not a Service Robot Co. client record. It still shows why a vendor-neutral integrator matters when you have multi-level malls, aging lifts, and strict night windows.

Service Robot Co. matches scrubber size and dock kits to your square footage, finances buy or lease paths, maps routes with your facilities team, and supports fleets nationwide under RoboCare. A single-floor pilot often proves elevator handshakes before you expand to full overnight coverage.

Frequently asked questions

In this deployment, engineers integrated the scrubber with an older elevator so it could move between floors during night cleaning. US malls should run supervised test crossings and document fire and life-safety rules before going unattended.
