A Central Italian Hospital's UVC Robot Runs About Five Minutes per Room
How a university hospital in central Italy runs UVC room disinfection in about five minutes between patients, and what that benchmark means for turnover.
- 5 min
- Approximate UVC cycle per room between patients
- 1158
- Beds at the teaching hospital where the deployment ran
- 4 rooms
- Ward, ICU isolation and two operating theater rooms sampled
- 2021
- Prospective study window, 14 April to 16 June
Based on a documented real-world deployment. Figures are from public reporting; the organization is not named.
Turnover pressure in a busy teaching hospital
A teaching hospital with more than a thousand beds runs on a clock that most visitors never see. A room freed after discharge is not ready for the next patient until its surfaces have been cleaned and checked. In an operating theater or an ICU isolation room, that wait sits directly on the path between one case and the next.
Manual cleaning at this hospital already follows a standard protocol. The open question was what could follow it, and a UVC unit brings its own rules. Its high intensity light means nobody can be in the room while it runs, so the schedule has to be built around empty rooms and closed doors.
- Rooms must be unoccupied before a cycle starts, because UVC intensity rules out people being present
- Every door must be closed before the unit can run
- Staff training has to stay light enough to fit a busy ward roster
- Ventilation should not need to be shut off, and rooms should not need to be sealed
How the deployment was run, step by step
The hospital did not reorganize its cleaning department around the robot. Staff cleaned and disinfected each room under the standard protocol first, and the robot came in afterward. Once every door was closed, a cycle could be started remotely.
Four rooms were sampled: one single occupancy ward room, one ICU isolation room that had been occupied for at least 48 hours, and two operating theaters. The work ran as a prospective, open label crossover design from 14 April to 16 June 2021, which kept clinical routines steady throughout.
Each cycle runs five minute exposures from several positions placed close to high touch surfaces, so the unit covers the places hands reach most often.
- Standard manual clean and disinfection of the room first
- Confirm the room is empty and every door is closed
- Start the UVC cycle remotely
- Run cycles from several positions close to high touch surfaces
- Keep staff training to a minimum for the routine
What the cycle time gives a turnover plan
The headline figure is operational. A UVC cycle takes approximately five minutes per room between patients, and that is a number a bed manager can place on a board. A room can be cleared, cycled and handed back to the ward inside a short, predictable window.
The figure is best used as a scheduling benchmark. Other UVC platforms publish different numbers, and the spread is useful context. UVDI 360 from UVD Innovations lists 5 to 10 minutes for an average sized room in vendor figures, as of October 2026. RobotLAB describes 10 to 30 minute cycles per room for its UVD Robots Model C, also in vendor figures as of October 2026. A peer reviewed study of an autonomous UVC machine in a tertiary hospital reported a mean effective disinfection time of 15.11 minutes across 439 interventions in theatres and ICU rooms.
Where a lease fits a UVC program
Service Robot Co. is a full service, OEM neutral commercial robot integrator for US businesses. We select the right robots across manufacturers, then finance, deploy, integrate, train, and service every unit through a nationwide US engineer network. For a hospital weighing a UVC program, the first step is a site assessment that maps room layouts, door positions and staffing patterns before any unit is chosen.
Our offer is a lease. Service Robot Co. leases robots through financing on a 3 year lease, with one fixed payment quoted after the site assessment. Robot leasing for business like this keeps capital free for clinical work. Across the market, leases often run 3 to 5 years with monthly payments, and maintenance and software updates are frequently bundled, though the scope of service is set out in each quote.
A UVC unit is one line in a turnover plan, not the plan itself. Go live support and training help ward staff learn when a cycle can start and how the schedule fits around clinical work. Our integrator model keeps selection, financing, deployment and service under one vendor relationship.
