Key takeaways
- GCSAA's CEO called labor the number one challenge facing members when the workforce initiative launched in June 2023.
- According to GCSAA's 2022 labor survey, 63 percent of respondents rated the labor market bad or very bad.
- Waiting on a hire means accepting that the fairway hours you counted on are already gone.
- Map weekly hours by task and by person before choosing what to automate.
- Autonomous fairway mowing can return crew time to greens, bunkers and tees, but only if the schedule changes to match.
Labor is the top challenge, and waiting has a cost
GCSAA's CEO has called labor the number one challenge facing its members. When the association launched its workforce opportunities initiative in June 2023, Rhett Evans made that point for the industry overall. The facts in this article date from 2023, and I found no newer published results on how the initiative has performed.
For a superintendent, the practical risk is simple. A fairway mowing hour that depends on one seat operator disappears the day that person resigns, retires or fails to show up. Waiting on a hire means those hours are already gone before the vacancy closes.
The better move is to find out which hours are at risk this season and what can be done about each one. That is a mapping exercise, and it can be finished in a week with timecards and a whiteboard.
What GCSAA and The Warrior Alliance have set up
In February 2023, GCSAA and The Warrior Alliance announced a partnership to build a golf maintenance career pathway, mainly for veterans. The two groups signed a memorandum of understanding at the 2023 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show, and the program was expected to start in early 2024.
GCSAA said the program would reach beyond veterans to anyone who wants to advance in golf course maintenance. Planned formats include classroom, online, hands-on and apprenticeship experiences, with the aim of building trained maintenance workers rather than just applicants.
I could not confirm how many workers have completed the GCSAA-specific program. A superintendent should not assume a trained pool is ready to hire. Treat the pathway as a longer-term pipeline and staff the coming season without counting on it.
How big is the labor problem in the numbers
According to GCSAA's 2022 labor survey, 63 percent of respondents listed the labor market as bad or very bad. That figure predates the 2023 initiative, and it describes the industry as a whole, not your crew.
Survey data can show the mood of the market. It cannot tell you how many fairway hours your crew lost last June. For that, you need your own records and your own timecards.
Leadership is changing too. GCSAA has announced that Evans is concluding nearly two decades of leadership, effective Sept. 29, 2027, so the association's labor agenda will eventually pass to a new CEO.
Mapping the weekly hours at risk
Start with one week of timecards from your busiest stretch. Break the week into blocks by task and by person, then note how many hours depend on a single named operator.
- Tag each fairway mowing block with the seat and the person who runs it.
- Flag any block that has no trained backup on the crew.
- Mark blocks that fall on peak tee times, events or tournament setup.
- Count the overtime hours that appear when one person is out for a week.
Where autonomous fairway mowing can return crew time
An autonomous fairway mower can take over scheduled fairway passes that currently tie up a seat operator. That frees people for greens, bunkers and tees, where hand work and judgment still matter most.
The return is real only if the schedule changes. A mower that runs before dawn but leaves the crew pulled into the same tasks at 8 a.m. returns nothing. Pair each automated window with a named crew task that takes its place.
The tradeoffs are real. Someone still sets up the mower, supervises it, handles charging and maintenance, and clears any stop that needs a person. The mower reallocates hours. It does not erase the need for a crew.
How to pilot without overcommitting
A phased pilot limits risk. Start with a few holes or one fairway zone, run the mower through a full season of scheduled windows, and record what changed in crew hours and cut quality.
Log the things that matter: hours returned to greens and bunkers, interruptions to play, stops that needed human help, and time spent on setup. Compare these against the audit you did earlier, not against a guess.
Write down the exit terms before the first pass. Know how a pilot ends, what happens to the crew roles involved, and who answers the phone when the machine stops.
Where Service Robot Co. fits the fairway plan
Service Robot Co. is a full-service commercial robot integrator for US businesses, and we are OEM-neutral. We pick the right robots across manufacturers for the job, arrange commercial robot leasing through financing, then deploy, integrate, train your team and service every unit.
We offer robot lease options only. We quote one fixed lease after a site assessment, on a 3-year lease, and that assessment includes site assessment mapping of the course before the first pass. The quote reflects your layout rather than a generic template.
Every unit is covered under RoboCare, our service program, with regional service engineers in every state we service. One vendor handles the full lifecycle, so a stopped mower does not turn into three separate phone calls.
