A Northeast Florida County Sports Park Puts an Autonomous Mower on Its Fields

A county-run sports park in northeast Florida adds an autonomous mower to its fields. What was approved, what was reported, and what crews should plan.

Fields that never stop asking for cuts

A county-run regional sports park in northeast Florida mows on a calendar it does not control. Fields need cutting between practices, tournaments and league games, and every hour a crew spends on a mower is an hour away from edging, irrigation and repairs.

Staffing makes the squeeze tighter. Gwinnett County, Georgia, moved to automatic mowers in 2023 as a response to a staffing shortage, according to local coverage from that June. That example shows staffing as the pressure pushing grounds departments toward autonomous machines.

Approval first, then the mower

The county commission approved the autonomous mower for the park. That vote moved the idea from proposal to equipment the grounds team would learn to schedule around.

The mower has since covered about 100 acres of sports fields. That gives the crew a working base of operating time to plan the next season against.

Teams planning a similar start should settle a few points before the first pass.

  • Map every field boundary, low spot and obstacle before the first mowing run.
  • Block tournament days, practices and league play windows on the calendar.
  • Agree who checks, resets and reports on the mower each day.
  • Log acreage and crew hours from the first week so later comparisons are measured.

What has been reported so far

The reported result is scale: about 100 acres of sports fields mowed by the autonomous mower. Staff hour and labor figures are what most operators will ask for next, and those are best drawn from the crew's own logs, week by week, against the same fields mowed by hand.

For a broader view of staffing, Husqvarna's sports club page states, as of November 2026, that the total cost of ownership of an autonomous mower is about 30 percent lower than manual mowing. That is the manufacturer's own figure and a general one, not a measure from this park.

Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute keeps a golf course mowing project page, as of November 2026, which shows autonomous fairway mowing is an active research area.

Where a robot lease fits a grounds budget

Service Robot Co. is a full-service, OEM-neutral commercial robot integrator for US businesses. We compare machines across manufacturers, then handle robot leasing for business, deployment and integration, crew training and service through a nationwide US engineer network. One partner, one number.

A county or park operator usually weighs a lease against budget lines that are already fixed. Our fixed robot lease payment runs over a 3-year lease, quoted after a site assessment, so the cost is known before the mower moves onto the grass.

A robot pilot program is a sensible first step. Start with one leased unit, learn the turf, the event calendar and the play windows, then decide how far to take the fleet. The approval and acreage in this study show what a first season can look like.

Frequently asked questions

The grounds team sets the windows, and a site assessment should map fields, boundaries and blocked times before any mowing starts. Keep tournament days and play windows on the calendar first, then let the mower work the open hours. Ask how the schedule changes when an event is added at short notice.
