A Scottish Golf Club's Four Robotic Mowers Cut Overnight on 16 Fairways
A Scottish golf club put four robotic mowers in service in April and reports 30 to 40 labor hours saved each week in the growing season, by the club's estimate.

Fairways that needed cutting every day
At a Scottish golf club, fairway mowing is one of the least glamorous and most constant jobs on the course. Grass keeps growing on its own schedule, the cut has to be right before play starts, and every hour a crew spends on it is an hour taken from bunkers, greens and the wider grounds. Across 16 fairways, that routine made a steady call on crew time.
Daytime cutting adds its own friction. Machines working in the middle of the day share the course with players, and the crew has to stop, reposition and restart around them. A club in this position has a clear question: how to keep fairways cut to standard without tying up daytime hours on every pass.
The club had refreshed its wider machinery fleet about a year earlier.
- Daily fairway cutting across 16 fairways
- Daytime mowing that shares the course with players
- Crew hours spread across bunkers, greens and grounds
A trial first, then four mowers in April
The club began with a trial. The robot supplier and its dealer ran the early work, and before the club committed to a wider order, one unit worked two fairways toward the end of the previous year. That run let the course team see how the machine handled the ground before any decision on the rest of the course.
Four mowers arrived in April. The course manager reports that all four were running within the first days after installation. The units are rotary machines rather than cylinder mowers, and they were set to work overnight, when golfers are off the course.
- Trial with the robot supplier and its dealer
- One unit works two fairways ahead of the wider decision
- Four mowers delivered and installed in April
- All four running within the first days after installation
- Overnight schedule, about 9pm to 9am, four fairways per mower

Hours returned to the crew, by the club's count
The headline figure is the club's own estimate. Across the growing season, the club reports 30 to 40 labor hours a week saved. It measures the crew hours that routine fairway cutting no longer takes up.
The hours returned to the crew are the ones now free for the rest of the course, since fairway cutting no longer draws on them in daylight. With the mowers running overnight, daytime time became available for other work across the grounds.
Quality is the course manager's account. He says the fairways look at least as healthy as those cut by conventional machines, and he rates the cut quality as very good.
What this means for a business planning robot deployment

Service Robot Co. is an OEM neutral commercial robot integrator for US businesses. We select the right robots across manufacturers, then finance, deploy, integrate, train and service every unit through a nationwide US engineer network. The deployment at this club was not ours. The steps it followed, from trial to installation to service, are the steps we follow with US customers.
A trial came first here, and that is where commercial robot leasing usually begins. A site assessment comes before any quote, and the lease is quoted as one fixed robot lease payment over three years. A business can start with one leased unit as a robot pilot program, testing the work before a wider rollout.
Mowing shows why the service side matters. Overnight cutting works only when every unit is running at the hour the crew expects it, so the deployment, training and service behind each machine carry as much weight as the machine itself. Service Robot Co. holds that whole chain in one place, with service delivered through our nationwide engineer network.
