What is a robotic fairway mower?
It is a battery-powered mower with no rider. It follows a mapped route using GPS guidance, mows the fairway in straight lines, and drives back to its charger. Golf Course Industry describes one such reel mower as a 100-inch, 5-gang unit guided by RTK GPS.
People search it as a robotic reel mower, a golf course robot mower or an autonomous fairway mower. It is the same idea.
Is there a robotic greens mower?
Not in our program. Greens stay with your crew, who know the height, the speed and the surface.
The fairway passes are the repetitive miles. Moving them to a robot gives those hours back to greens, tees and bunkers.
Which parts of the course does a robot mow?
| Area | Who mows it | How |
|---|---|---|
| Fairways | Robot | Autonomous reel mower on a mapped route, mowing on the hours your superintendent sets. |
| Rough | Robot | Compact autonomous rotary mower on its own mapped zones. |
| Approaches and tees | Decided at the site visit | We walk them with your superintendent and say honestly whether a machine fits. |
| Greens | Your crew | Stays with your crew. We do not put robots on greens. |
| Bunkers, edges, trim | Your crew | Hand work and the details golfers notice. |
What does the USGA say about robot mowers?
From the USGA Green Section Record, April 2025. The research used Husqvarna robotic mowers at courses in five European countries, with funding that included Husqvarna.
- Golfers
- In a golfer survey at three courses in Norway, Denmark and Sweden, 90% of respondents had positive or neutral feelings about robot mowers on the course.
- Turf quality
- In the same research project, robotic mowers delivered acceptable turf quality in nearly all situations, and better quality than conventional units in some.
- Play
- The USGA article says robot mowers are programmed to move around obstacles, including golf balls, and superintendents park them during tournaments or heavy play.
- The first year
- Superintendents in the study called the first year a learning process. Blades need regular changes, and a designated staff member may be needed as the fleet grows.
Can a robot mow fairways at night?
Yes. Golf Course Industry reported four autonomous reel mowers covering all 18 fairways, 60 acres, in about four hours each night at the 2024 Black Desert Championship, a PGA Tour event.
Your superintendent sets the hours. Night, early morning or between groups, it is your call.
