Cart-Path-Only Tournament Days and Fairway Robot Transit Rules

Run fairway robots on cart paths during path-only tournaments. Set transit rules, hold open turf passes, and align pro shop messaging when play stays on paths.

Key takeaways

  • Cart-path-only days mean fairway mowing robots stay off turf panels, not off the property.
  • Path transit routes must be mapped before tournament week, not invented between groups.
  • Starters need to know when robots may appear on paths players use.
  • Hold open-area schedules entirely when paths are shared with evacuation routes.
  • Service Robot Co. maps path-only corridors during deployment and updates them after events.

What changes for robots on cart-path-only days?

When the course goes cart-path only for a tournament, autonomous fairway mowers stop open fairway and rough passes. They may still move on mapped cart paths if your safety plan allows equipment transit while play is on paths. Players who already dislike path-only rounds will notice any fairway tire mark instantly.

The change is not cosmetic. Turf panels that would normally finish overnight stay parked until the event ends or the superintendent releases zones hole by hole.

Write the rule in the robot calendar the same day the pro shop posts cart restrictions.

Add tournament week to the robot calendar when the committee books dates, not the week before.

When is path transit allowed during play?

Allow path transit only in gaps when no group is using the connector you need, or when marshals clear a corridor for maintenance equipment.

Some clubs ban all robot movement during competitive rounds and limit transit to before dawn and after the last group. Pick one policy and stick to it all week.

If players share paths with robots, slow speeds and visible beacons matter as much as they do for utility carts.

How do you map path-only corridors?

Map path segments separately from fairway panels so software cannot drift onto turf at corners. Tight turns near tees are where drift shows up first.

Mark holes where paths narrow between bunkers and trees. Those choke points may be human-only during the event.

Export a tournament map file so reliefs do not run the summer fairway loop by mistake.

Disable fairway geofences entirely if software makes path-only mode easy to violate.

What should the starter and marshals know?

Give starters a one-line script: robots are on paths only and will not enter fairways. Marshals need the same line when players ask about maintenance noise.

If a robot must cross a path players use, coordinate a hold with the group ahead like you would for a spray cart.

Radio discipline matters more on path-only days because every surface feels like player territory.

Photograph rope lines that push players onto paths robots also use.

How do crew tasks shift when robots stay on paths?

Crew may need extra hand mowing on panels robots cannot touch during the event. Greens and tees were never on robots anyway.

Detail work around collars and approaches often spikes when fairway loops pause. Plan labor before you assume robots free everyone for setup.

Use the pause to service walk-behinds robots never touched during peak season.

Practice the starter script in the morning meeting so reliefs sound consistent.

When can fairway passes resume after the event?

Resume open-area mowing when cart rules return to normal and turf firmness passes your foot test. Tournament teardown may leave ropes that still block robots.

Re-enable zones nine by nine if only the back nine hosted cart-path play on Sunday.

Log reopen times in the maintenance record for next year's template.

Note which holes stayed path-only an extra day for cleanup.

How does wet weather change path-only rules?

Wet paths can be as sensitive as wet fairways. Hold path transit when you would limit carts to paths for moisture, not only when fairways are closed.

After rain, inspect low paths near drainage before any autonomous move.

Players already frustrated with path-only rules notice ruts from maintenance quickly.

How does an integrator help before tournament week?

Service Robot Co. is OEM-neutral on autonomous fairway mowers. We finance buy or lease options, map fairways, rough, and path transit, train your watch lead, and service units under RoboCare with regional engineers in every state we cover.

Import tournament dates during deployment so default holds exist before the first invitation goes out.

After the event, review whether corners need buffer edits based on what marshals saw.

Bring path-only maps to the fall debrief with the tournament chair.

Frequently asked questions

Only if the event rules and superintendent clear specific panels. Default to path-only or full hold when the tournament owns the course. Document the call in the daily log.
