Rainout Days and Fairway Robot Mud Holds

Hold autonomous fairway mowers off saturated turf after rainouts, log aborted passes, and align pro shop messaging with superintendent mud calls on wet fairways.

Key takeaways

  • Saturated fairways need the same equipment blackout you give carts after heavy rain.
  • Hole-by-hole drainage means robots pause on soft nines while others may be firm.
  • Aborted-pass reason codes should say mud or moisture, not look like a breakdown.
  • Members need the same daily call posted for carts applied to maintenance robots.
  • Service Robot Co. maps wet pockets during site assessment before buy or lease financing.

When should fairway robots hold after a rainout?

Hold fairway robots until the superintendent clears wheeled equipment for the day. Rainouts leave pore space full of water, and tire shear on soft turf shows up as ruts long after the sun returns. According to USGA turf traffic guidance, concentrated traffic on saturated fairways can injure grass even when surfaces look playable from the path.

Autonomous units follow the same rule as ride-on fairway mowers. If carts are path only or fairways are closed for moisture, robots should not cut diagonals members cannot use.

Greens and tees stay with the crew. Fairway and agreed rough polygons should shrink to dry holes only when the course opens in phases.

How is a mud hold different from a frost delay?

Frost is about frozen leaf tissue. Mud holds are about soil structure and water in the profile. The morning walk looks different, but the release question is the same: will this tire do damage?

Rain that ends at midnight can still leave valley holes soft at dawn. Robots programmed for 5 a.m. passes need a human gate, not optimism.

Document the hold reason. Mud and frost should use different codes in your dispatch log so analytics stay honest.

Drainage, shade, and soil type vary hole by hole. A back-nine low spot may stay soft while front-nine fairways firm by mid-morning.

Irrigation that ran before the storm can leave extra moisture compared with heads that stayed off.

Robot maps should allow per-hole blackouts instead of course-wide on or off switches.

  • Walk the wettest hole before any fairway release.
  • Compare cart path dryness to fairway center softness.
  • Note irrigation status in the morning log.
  • Shrink polygons to firm holes when opening in phases.

Should robots ever run while carts stay on paths?

Sometimes path-only cart rules still allow maintenance on firm strips. That call belongs to agronomy, not software defaults.

If fairways are closed to members, robots should not imply play is open. Sightings on paths need pro shop context.

When only rough is firm enough, keep units on agreed rough corridors and off saturated fairway centers.

How should members hear about mud holds?

Add one line to rain delay emails: maintenance robots follow the same moisture call as carts. That prevents a robot on a path from reading as fairways open.

Golf Course Industry profiles show pro shops field daily questions after storms. Give staff the superintendent morning script for robots too.

Posting aborted passes builds trust when stripes look uneven after a wet week.

What changes through a wet season?

Spring and summer thunder patterns can stack multiple soft days in a row. Pass frequency should drop when growth slows, not just when robots idle.

Aerification and topdressing weeks need longer blackouts than a single rain event.

Fall color seasons still bring tropical moisture in many regions. Keep chargers on pavement and routes away from silted exits.

Where does integration help after rainouts?

Mud planning touches drainage maps, cart policy, and dispatch software together. Service Robot Co. stays vendor neutral, selects fairway-capable autonomous mowers, and bundles buy or lease financing with deployment and RoboCare service.

Request a free site assessment that marks chronic wet holes, charger placement, and how morning release will be communicated.

Pilot one loop through a known wet month before fleet schedules harden for next season.

Frequently asked questions

Only when agronomy clears equipment for that hole. Light mist on a firm fairway differs from a rainout that filled pore space. When in doubt, wait for the walk.
